Sitting in the kitchen, a cup of tea in hand, Sully waited for them to get home. Saturday nights were always the hardest. With all the business customers wanting to be clean for the coming week, they had to hustle to get everyone bright and shiny.

That done, they met in the parking lot of the convenience store and gas station on the Parks Highway to compare notes with Cheryl and Diane. They would all part and head home for the balance of the night.

Sully liked his life. He enjoyed working with the women. The four of them had a positive outlook on life. Happy to have jobs that paid decent and allowed them to have part of the day free for other things, working with them didn’t drag him down.

Ellie, Cheryl and Diane were middle-aged. Ellie had Eva while still in her teens, not an unheard of thing in the native community. They were all in good health, as were his parents. He hadn’t considered it before, but things couldn’t go on forever the way they were.

He glanced around the kitchen. Everything he saw hadn’t been replaced in years. The stove, fridge, and dishwasher all dated from his teen years. He could replace one, two in a pinch. The plane would need a full overhaul after the first of the year if he kept flying approximately the same number of hours. It would clean out his savings the way things stood.

After a glance at the clock, he popped open a container of biscuits to bake and put the big skillet on the burner. Time to make scrambled eggs. When they were still moist, he’d put the biscuits in the oven. Breakfast would be ready for his crew when they walked in.

As he scraped the cooked eggs from the bottom of the pan on top and out to the edges, Sully decided. The three of them—him, Eva, and Ellie—needed to expand the business. It had kept Ellie and Eva going after Eldred died, but the janitorial service had to grow. They weren’t making enough to handle an emergency.

The ten-year-old van they used would need to be replaced soon. Eva had been making noises about a kid. His parents wouldn’t stay healthy forever. They’d been cruising along okay, but would hit a pothole sooner or later.

Sully turned the burner low, arranged the raw biscuits on a cookie sheet and tossed it in the oven. He gave the eggs one more flip and turned the burner off. His cold tea went in the microwave and he turned to stare out the window. He understood what brought this on—Willis Kent. The bastard was up to something and it had to do with Eva. If anything happened to him, what then? He’d been drifting. No more.

Eva, the first one in, gave him a big kiss then sniffed the air. “Biscuits?”

“Yep. And scrambled eggs to go with. There’s tea in the pot.”

“How was the flight?” his dad asked as he took the plate Eva handed him.

“Okay. Those two guys were late and bitched about everything.
